Academics

Equity American School teaches American Curriculum.

Curriculum

The Upper School follows a standard U.S. course sequence that emphasizes reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking. Coursework is rigorous and designed to prepare students with the skills they need to succeed in college. Curriculum instruction is typically in English, except for courses in foreign languages and orchestra. The school offers flexible learning plans and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) support and additional mathematics instruction. AP courses are not offered, but three courses are designated Honors: 11th grade Physics, 12th grade Calculus, and 12th grade U.S. Government and Politics.

Student Teacher Ratio

The school maintains small classrooms with a low student-to-teacher ratio. This supports immediate feedback and close teacher–student interaction.

Exam Results

Elementary through tenth grade are tested and comparatively evaluated yearly through SAT-10; juniors and seniors are tested with the SAT and ACT college entrance exams. All students who originate from a country where English is not the native language must also pass the TOEFL-iBT exam. Most graduates earn scores above U.S. national averages, and 100% of graduates are accepted at U.S. universities or colleges. During the past five years, the majority of our graduates have averaged between 40% and 60% of their university tuition expense in scholarships and grants.

Higher Education Progression

Graduates are admitted to U.S. universities or colleges. Their SAT, ACT, and TOEFL scores reflect solid preparation, with most graduates earning scores above national averages. All graduates are admitted to U.S. universities or colleges, and in the past five years most graduates have received scholarships covering 40–60% of tuition.

Gifted and Talented

The school accommodates students who have been in gifted and talented programs in the U.S. The mathematics curriculum reserves projects for more gifted students, or uses them as extra-credit.

Admissions

Admissions

1) Admission. We accept all students that meet our academic and conduct requirements, regardless of race, religion, or national origin. 2) Age requirements for Pre-Kinder, Kindergarten, and First Grade. Pre-Kinder students must be four years old on or before August 1; Kindergarten students must be five years old on or before August 1; First Grade students must be six years old on or before August 1. 3) Application process. If an applicant has had previous school experience, grade reports or transcripts must reflect at least an 85% composite average with no failing grades for the previous school year, and a letter of good conduct from the previous school. 4) Entrance assessment. Generally, applicants are required to take an admissions exam to determine proficiency at the requested grade level; an exam may not be required if the applicant demonstrates outstanding academic achievement during the previous two school years. 5) Required documents. The applicant completes and submits a Student Application Form, presents an original birth certificate and/or passport, and provides pertinent certificates, medical records, or evaluations. 6) Submission methods. Documents and the application may be submitted by mail, courier, or through an intermediary, but the process is completed in person by the applicant and the parents or legal guardians. 7) Admissions review. If there is space and all requirements are met, the principal(s) submit the materials with their recommendation to the Admissions Committee, which consists of both school principals and the Director or Executive Director. 8) Interviews. In some cases, the Admissions Committee may request a personal interview with the applicant and parents. 9) Decision timeline. The Committee generally renders a decision within five work days of receiving the completed application and the pertinent documents. 10) Continuance requirements. Seven credits are required per year for all ninth through twelfth grade students. The core subject curriculum and small class sizes allow accommodation for students who have been in gifted and talented programs in the United States. 11) Academic probation. Students receiving less than an 85% composite average, or who fail any course during any quarter, are placed on Academic Probation for the next quarter and must raise their grades to continue at the school. 12) Probation support. Most students on Academic Probation who are willing to put forth extra effort can overcome deficiencies; teachers work closely with students to help them get back on track, with cooperation from parents. 13) Transfer to other schools and universities. The academic record is a main strength; students transferring from Equity to other elementary or upper schools are readily accepted. Elementary through tenth grade students are tested yearly with a national standardized exam (SAT-10); juniors and seniors are tested with SAT and ACT. All students from countries where English is not the native language must also pass TOEFL-iBT. 14) College preparation and outcomes. The High School program is college preparatory; scores on SAT, ACT, and TOEFL reflect solid university preparation. Most graduates earn scores above U.S. national averages, and 100% are admitted to U.S. universities or colleges. In the past five years, the majority of graduates have averaged between 40% and 60% of their university tuition costs through scholarships and financial aid. 15) Starting the admissions process. To begin, download the Prospective Student Information Form, fill it out, and email it to admissions@eas.edu.gt. For questions, contact the admissions office at +502 2390-6800. The admissions office will contact the applicant family to continue the process. 16) Additional information. Appointments are requested for visits; the school can be located via Waze or Google Maps.
