Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

GIS integrates social and emotional development into its learning. In Pre-School, Personal Wellbeing is part of the curriculum. Structures that support wellbeing, mentorship, and open communication create an atmosphere where students feel safe to take intellectual risks. Pastoral care plays a defining role in supporting students as individuals navigating academic and personal growth. The school fosters trust and a culture of care that underpins students' academic and personal development.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

GIS embraces inclusive education. An adapted curriculum meets individual learning needs so that no learner is left behind. Inclusive education is essential for all learners, not only those with special needs, and GIS aims to make inclusive practices standard in classrooms. This approach supports social and emotional development through differentiated instruction and targeted support. Teachers tailor instruction and create supportive learning environments to ensure all learners participate and succeed.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

GIS is an English-medium school. English is the language of instruction school-wide, and in Pre-School the curriculum includes English and Additional Communication skills. English is a core subject in the Primary School's PSLE-aligned curriculum, with English taught alongside other languages such as Setswana and French. In High School, English is taught as a core subject within the Cambridge IGCSE program.

Mental Wellbeing

Wellbeing is central to GIS. Pastoral care supports students academically and personally, and the school has a resident psychologist who provides emotional and psychological support. A restorative approach to discipline focuses on growth rather than punishment, helping learners develop resilience and confidence. Structures that provide wellbeing, mentorship, and open communication create an environment where learners feel safe to engage, explore, and develop. GIS aims to equip students to be adaptable, confident, and culturally aware.

Safeguarding

GIS promotes a partnership among students, teachers, and parents/guardians to educate our students to be responsible citizens. The promotion and protection of a safe, disciplined, and inclusive learning environment is essential for effective teaching and learning. The physical environment is kept safe and free of dangerous objects. During the pandemic, safety protocols include mask-wearing for all, social distancing, and regular handwashing to slow the spread of disease. Clear safety policies and ongoing vigilance ensure the wellbeing of the school community.
