Introduction

Clifton College is a co‑educational day school in Bristol with a history dating to 1862, when it was founded by Dr John Percival and later granted a Royal Charter in 1877. It offers the Cambridge International Curriculum from Form 1 to A Levels, using IGCSE as the foundation before Cambridge AS and A Levels. At the end of Form 2, pupils choose four subjects across five blocks (A–E) aligned to university pathways and career plans; core options include Mathematics (and Additional Mathematics), English Language and Literature, Sciences, Humanities, and Languages such as Afrikaans, French and Setswana. The Cambridge pathway connects IGCSE choices to A-Level study and future study, with explicit subject groupings. Clifton sits on 90 acres of facilities featuring the Chellaram Sports Complex, an eight-court hall and a water‑based hockey pitch, supporting extensive sport and outdoor education. The co‑curriculum includes the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, overseas expeditions and the Terriers Programme. Performing arts thrive in the Redgrave Theatre, Chapel Choir, Orchestra and a recording studio, with Music Technology courses available to pupils.

Academics

Clifton College teaches Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS Levels, Cambridge A Levels.

Curriculum

Clifton College follows the Cambridge International Curriculum for Form 1 to A levels. At the end of Form 2, students are guided to choose subjects in accordance with clearly distinguished pathways in the Cambridge IGCSE Programme, directly linked to A-Level studies, preferred fields of study at tertiary level and career choices. Main subjects offered include Mathematics (and Additional Mathematics); English Language and Literature; Humanities and Social Sciences (Economics, Geography, History, Sociology); Languages (Afrikaans, French, Setswana); Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Management); and Business, Technical and Creative subjects (Accounting, Business Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Travel and Tourism, Art and Design). AS-Level subjects are grouped into five blocks (Block A to Block E); a student is expected to choose one subject per block from any four blocks, for a total of four subjects, ensuring alignment with university admission requirements. Block A includes Biology and Business Studies; Block B includes Chemistry, Geography, Economics; Block C includes Physics, English Language, Accounting; Block D includes Mathematics and History; Block E includes Information Technology and Sociology. Four subjects must be selected in total and extensive research on university study programmes and career options is recommended, taking cognisance of admission requirements.

In 1877, Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter that established the College in its modern form. The College's history includes the 1880s provision of education for Jewish pupils and, during the 1940s, evacuation to Cornwall when Bristol faced wartime disruption, after which US Army occupancy of the site occurred. Notable Old Cliftonians include Trevor Howard, Sir Michael Redgrave, Simon Russell-Beale, and John Cleese; the College also counts three Nobel Prize winners among its alumni: Sir John Kendrew (Chemistry, 1962), Sir John Hicks (Economics, 1972), and Sir Nevill Francis Mott (Physics, 1977).

Community

The Clifton College community is organized around a House system that unites pupils across age groups, with older pupils taking on leadership roles to mentor younger students and foster a lifelong sense of belonging. Parental engagement is supported through House activities and a calendar of social and performing arts events, including Safari Supper, House Song, and House Play, which strengthen ties between families and the College. Regular events and wraparound care in Pre-Prep and Prep reinforce a strong parent community, contributing to a connected and supportive environment for pupils, parents, and staff alike. From Preschool through to Sixth Form, Clifton College provides an education where character is as important as capability.
